Snap Happy Bags

I am obsessed with these bags! I love making them, and I still sit here opening and closing them whenever I pick one up.

A Snap Happy Bag is unique in that it uses a Stanley Tape Measure for its opening! Yes, you actually cut up a tape measure and use it! (I can see it now…husbands around the country wondering, “I know I left my tape measure here last week…”)

At the 2010 Sewing Retreat in Chamberlain, SD, I sat next to Donna L who whipped up three of these adorable bags one evening. I came home, ordered the patterns and they have been selling like hot-cakes ever since!

Snap Happy bags can be made in multiple sizes. The pattern offers exact dimensions to make three sizes, with directions to make a Snap Happy bag any size you want. I have seen Snap Happy bags with a top that opens as large as 14”. The little tabs on each side of the top of the bag make it easy to pull and open.

A good suggestion from one of our customers… “Don’t buy tape measures from the dollar store. They do not have a strong enough curve in the tape measure to form a tight closure on the top of the bag. It is pretty wimpy.”

Patterns are available from Heirloom Creations. Call 605-332-4435 to have one shipped to you.

Click here to vote for Kate in the ArgusLeader’s Cutie Kids Contest.

We discovered Kate is a great traveler! Steve, Kate and I took our vacation to Oklahoma City to visit friends. Some highlights from the trip for her were: first time swimming, eating deviled eggs (yummy!), shaking cheerios all over the back seat and meeting her Great Aunt Teresa.

Tomato “Needle” Cushions – Store Slightly Used Needles Here!

tomato-pin-cushion-1.JPG

Tomato pin cushions are a sewing icon. For me, though, they are more trouble than they are worth as a pin cushion. I prefer a magnetic pin cushion that will grab the pin if I just let it go near the magnetic base.

However, my tomato pin cushion has become a holder for my slightly used sewing machine needles!

Use an Identi Pen (a permanent fabric marker that does not bleed like a Sharpie marker), to label each of the tomato sections with needle types and sizes.

Extra Tip for Serger Owners: Keep a second tomato needle cushion to keep track of sharp and ballpoint serger needles!

The next time you use a sewing machine needle for just a short time, put it in its proper section instead of returning it to the needle package.

Forward pictures of your favorite needle/pin cushions to me at info@heirloomcreations.net!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

st.gifOne day an Irishman, who had been stranded on a deserted island for more than 10 years, saw a speck on the horizon. He thought to himself, “It’s certainly not a ship.” As the speck got closer and closer, he began to rule out the possibilities of a small boat and even a raft.

Suddenly there emerged from the surf a wet-suited black clad figure. Putting aside the scuba gear and the top of the wet suit, there stood a drop-dead gorgeous blonde! The glamorous blonde strode up to the stunned Irishman and said to him, “How long has it been since you had a good cigar.”

“Ten years,” replied the amazed Irishman.

With that, she reached over and unzipped a waterproof pocket on the left sleeve of her wetsuit and pulled out a fresh package of cigars. He takes one, lights it, and takes a long drag. “Faith and b’gorrah,” said the man, “that is so good. I’d almost forgotten how great a smoke can be!

And how long has it been since you’ve had a drop of good Powers Irish Whiskey?” asked the blonde.
Trembling, the castaway replied, “Ten years.”

Hearing that, the blonde reaches over to her right sleeve, unzips a pocket – removes a flask a nd hands it to him. He opened the flask and took a long drink.

“‘Tis the nectar of the Gods!” stated the Irishman. “Truly fantastic.”

At this point the gorgeous blonde started to slowly unzip the long front of her wet suit, right down the middle. She looked at the trembling man and asked, “And how long has it been since you played around?”

With tears in his eyes, the Irishman fell to his knees and sobbed -”Jesus, Mary and Joseph! Don’t tell me you’ve got golf clubs in there, too!”
